Motorbike manufacturers are concerned about creating a self-controlled motorbike that will help reduce motorcycle deaths.
Statistics data are appalling: motorcyclists die in traffic accidents 28 times more often than car drivers. The BMW Motorrad company decided to contribute to the safety of motorcyclists and presented the result of more than two years of work – a self-guided motorbike that independently maintains balance during movement.
A small video shows the new BMW motorcycle. It rides without a driver on a test track, it bends in turns and brakes at a given point.
The representatives of BMW Motorrad emphasize that the project was aimed not at creating an autonomous unmanned motorbike, but at developing technologies that provide a higher level of stability in critical road situations that can prevent the most frequent road accidents occurring with motorcyclists.
Yet the problem is much more complicated than it seems at first glance, especially in comparison with the automotive industry. In case of an emergency, a self-guided car is capable of sudden braking without any harm to the driver who is fastened with a seatbelt. A motorcyclist does not have such belts, and therefore there is a high probability that, because of emergency braking, he will simply fly out of his “iron horse” saddle and get injured.
