Expanding the range of smartphones, Huawei is launching its second foldable screen device. The smartphone under the brand name Huawei Mate X2 will replace the first model Mate X, presented by Huawei back in October 2019. The novelty has received a number of fundamental changes compared to the company’s first flexible model.
First of all, the principle of folding the screen, the design, and the dimensions of the smartphone have been changed. In the Huawei Mate X2, the size of the main screen (2480×2200), folding inward (like in the rival Samsung Galaxy Fold) is now 8 inches (the Mate X is 6.6 inches). The outer screen (2700×1160), working when the main display is folded, is 6.45 inches. For screens, OLED matrices have used that support a refresh rate of 90 Hz.
The hardware part of the smartphone runs on the proprietary Kirin 9000 processor. The smartphone is equipped with 8 GB of RAM and, depending on the modification, built-in flash memory with a capacity of 256 or 512 GB. Autonomous operation is provided by a 4400 mAh battery with the support for 55 W fast charging.
The back panel of the smartphone is equipped with the main camera unit with four sensors: the main wide-angle sensor of 50 megapixels, an ultra-wide-angle 16-megapixel sensor, a 12-megapixel telephoto module with 3x optical zoom. The fourth sensor is equipped with an 8-megapixel sensor with a SuperZoom module that provides 10x optical zoom. The front camera is also located on the outside of the smartphone in the oval cutout of the upper left side of the additional screen. Taking selfies with the main screen open, apparently, will fail.
Huawei’s opposition to the US government has led to a lack of support for Google services and applications, however, the smartphone is running on Android 10 with a proprietary shell EMUI 11.0. In the near future (most probably in April), the proprietary operating system for the folding smartphone, HarmonyOS, will be updated.
Chinese fans of Huawei can purchase the Mate X2 smartphone starting from February 25th for $2,785 for the base version with 256 GB of storage and for $2,940 for the model with 512 GB of storage.
