Panasonic Comes up with Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras Lumix S1 and Lumix S1R

Panasonic company has presented full-frame digital mirrorless cameras Lumix S1R and Lumix S1, providing a full list of specifications and features of the new products. The manufacturer told about the release of cameras for the first time at the Photokina 2018 exhibition, but the exact characteristics and cost of the devices were not disclosed.

The line is currently divided into two models, Lumix S1 and Lumix S1R: the first one has a sensor containing 24.2 megapixels, and the second one is 47.3 megapixels. S1 is a model that is more focused on the video segment of the market, while people who mostly work with stills are likely to find S1R more attractive, although both are capable of recording 4K video at 50/60 fps and Full HD-resolution. The recording is also possible at 180 frames per second.

Other differences between the cameras are that S1R, with its higher pixel density, can reach ISO 25,600, and S1 reaches up to ISO 51,200. However, S1R is capable of creating images in a much higher resolution. Both models are equipped with a “high-resolution mode” for photographs, which combines the information from eight exposures using an image stabilization system that performs microscopic adjustments. This allows S1 to take pictures in a RAW format with a resolution of 96 megapixels (12,000 x 8,000 pixels), while S1R can take photographs with a totally staggering 187-megapixel resolution (16,736 x 11,168 pixels). The high-resolution mode also has the option of suppressing blurred images, if it is a problem.

Both cameras can record video either on SD cards or on Sony-designed XQD cards via two card slots. The device will later be compatible with CFexpress.

Panasonic has taken note of some limitations as for recording time depending on the user mode because of the temperature control sensor. According to the company, 4K/30p and Full HD can be recorded without a time limit. In fact, with 4K/60p recording, one is limited to 29 minutes and 59 seconds, while high-speed modes (for example, 180 frames per second) are limited to 15 minutes of continuous recording.

For both S1 and S1R, the sound can be recorded through a 3.5 mm linear socket, although you can connect a DMW-XLR1 microphone adapter to the camera to provide balanced XLR audio input.

Both cameras have an electronic OLED viewfinder with a resolution of 5.76 million pixels, an update rate of up to 120 frames per second, a delay of 0.005 seconds, and a contrast ratio of 10,000:1. The back of the camera is equipped with a 3.2-inch touch screen with a resolution of 2.1 million points. It can be flipped for viewing at a low or high angle. There is also a large display with a top panel showing all current important settings. A built-in 5-axis image stabilization system Dual IS, USB-C 3.1 port, HDMI interface, microphone and headphone connectors are also available.

The new items will be available for sale on April 4, and their cost will be $2,499 and $3,699 for Lumix S1 and Lumix S1R, respectively. In addition, one can also buy 3 interchangeable lenses with an L-mount system and built-in optical image stabilization: Lumix 24-105 F/4 Macro OIS at the cost of $1,299, Lumix 70-200 F/4 OIS at the cost of $1,699, and Lumix 50mm F/1.4, which costs $2,299. A set that includes a camera and a replaceable 24-105mm lens will cost $3,397.99 or $ 4,597.99, respectively.
