The market of smartphones with curving screens is expanding, and new companies with original ideas are entering it. TCL company previously announced the technology of a rollable smartphone in the form factor of a side slider and clamshell DragonHinge. Currently, TCL developers have shown two working prototype models with different ways of folding the screen: one model will fold in the shape of letter Z, and the second one will have a stretching screen hidden inside the case.
Taking into consideration the smartphones with foldable screens that are already available on the market, a slider smartphone, previously presented only in releases and patents, is of more interest. The developers announced a model that has a screen diagonal of 6.75 inches when folded, and when stretched it increases the diagonal to 7.8 inches.
The demo video shows how a foldable OLED screen literally enters the inside of the case and moves back when unfolding. At the same time, the process itself takes place automatically using special engines rather than having the user apply an effort.
The developers could not demonstrate the operation of the existing prototype because the only finished sample is in Wuhan, in the quarantine zone. Therefore, a product without a screen and engines was shown during the presentation.
The second device, which bends along two lines and forms an impromptu letter Z, receives a screen with a diagonal of 10 inches after unfolding. Depending on the working conditions and the user needs, you can work with one, two or three planes. At the same time, a flexible smartphone can be fixed in various positions.
There is no information about the price, the time of release, or the specific technical data of the device yet.
