Panasonic Comes up with a Transparent OLED Display

Transparent OLED display technology has finally made its way to consumers after nearly five years of the demonstration at trade shows and conferences. Panasonic has announced the launch of a commercial 55-inch transparent display capable of high definition images. Retail distribution of the new displays will begin in Asia, Japan, and Oceania in early December 2020.

Two versions of monitors with the 55-inch diagonal, 16:9 aspect ratio and 1920×1080 pixel resolution will be launched on the market. The new product uses a self-luminous transparent OLED display that does not require backlighting. The ultra-thin display panel, which is less than 1 cm thick at the display area, provides high transparency and displays high quality images with vivid colors.

The TP-55ZT110 modification has a special background dimming unit that can “turn” the panel into a standard TV, broadcasting high-quality images even in bright ambient light. The weight of the model is 14 kg, which is 6 kg more than the TP-55ZT100 model, which does not have such a module.

Panasonic expects that transparent displays can be used not only in everyday life, but also mainly to realize the unique capabilities of the device in public places such as shopping establishments or museums. The use of transparent monitors on public transportation to provide information about the routes will also become apparent. However, the pricing information for the new transparent OLED displays has not been released yet.
