At-Home Hologram Machines by PORTL Inc.

The strict social isolation measures, introduced during the coronavirus pandemic, have led to the emergence of new technologies to create conditions that ensure the most comfortable communication between people. However, if users are already tired of communicating through video calling apps like Zoom, they can use a new unusual device from Los Angeles-based PORTL Inc. startup.

From now on, users can communicate in real-time with an interlocutor’s hologram, which is presented in full size. Among other things, the new device allows watching recorded holographic images of famous people or deceased relatives.

Externally, the PORTL device is a box the size of a telephone booth (2.1 x 1.5 x 0.6 meters). According to the director of PORTL Inc, David Nussbaum, any user will be able to “holoport” and appear in front of friends in life-size as a hologram, using a camera and a white background.

The company already has a wealth of experience in creating holograms. PORTL has already designed a holographic image of President Ronald Reagan for a library named after him and succeeded in the digital resurrection of rapper Tupac Shakur. The holographic camera is used with a standard electrical socket.

According to the developers, such a device will be useful for families of American military personnel involved in operations around the world or for old acquaintances, who are unable to contact because of the strict measures to combat coronavirus.

A rather high price for the first samples of the PORTL machine, which is currently 60 thousand dollars, will be reduced over the next 3-5 years. Furthermore, the company plans to produce lower-cost, smaller installation options.
