Abu Dhabi International Airport Gets Charged by Its Passengers’ Steps

Abu Dhabi International Airport has launched an interactive track that accumulates energy and data from the passengers’ steps. It works using electromagnetic generators scattered over 16 square meters of connecting triangles between airport terminals 1 and 3.

A joint project with the British clean-tech Pavegen company and the Abu Dhabi Masdar energy company is considered the first project of a commercial airport in the Middle East. It is stated that the device tracks about 8,000 travelers per day using the technology that converts steps into electrical energy to provide data and lighting along the aisle.

The system includes screens showing how much energy is collected. They have a special game interface for children, which shows airplanes rising or landing depending on how much energy is generated.

Using cheaper alternative energy sources is becoming an increasingly popular approach. The Spanish fitness center receives energy from exercising on treadmills and exercise bikes.
