Canadian engineers have created a new model of a flexible smartphone. The proposed prototype came close to serial production. Despite the fact that the model still has certain drawbacks, it is a breakthrough in its field.
The Canadian Human Media Lab based at Queens University, has created a new flexible smartphone called HoloFlex. The name may sound very familiar, and it really is. In fact, this laboratory previously presented a similar device called RefleX. The new prototype uses the familiar technology, but it is an improved version. If we compare the two devices, the first thing that catches your eye is the lack of two side wings in HoloFlex. Apparently, they contained electronics in ReFlex.
What you should know about HoloFlex? The new product already looks like a production model, although it is not yet. The device has a stereoscopic display that does not need any additional accessories, such as glasses. The screen consists of 16 thousands small lenses, which create flexibility. Furthermore, this technology allows seeing a three-dimensional image not only when you hold the smartphone, but also when you stand close by.
Despite the fact that the new product uses a screen with a Full HD format, its resolution is only 160 x 104 pixels. The technology that allowed ReFlex interact with the screen while bending, has also been preserved.
As for the specifications, the gadget runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 1.5 GHz frequency. The device supports 2 GB of RAM. It is based on the Android 5.1 operating system. However, for “flexible” smartphones, this is not so important. Finally, it is worth noting that many of the experimental elements of the smartphone have been created using 3D printing technology.
